Surprisingly even an aging adult (ex-auditor) could fall to the tricks of mediums (or "bomoh"). In the end, according to the STAR report, he lost RM$200,000 and his wife children left him...

Mediums cheat ex-auditor of nearly RM200,000

KUALA LUMPUR: He was an auditor who kept track of people’s money. Yet, a combination of superstition and gullibility caused a retired man to be cheated out of nearly RM200,000. And he lost his wife and daughters, too.

The retiree, who only wished to be known as Ng, had consulted a medium in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, on the recommendation of his niece after he felt “something amiss” in his life.

Ng, from Subang Jaya, went to see the medium about six months ago after a string of misfortunes to cleanse himself of “negative vibes.”

There, the 60 year-old female medium told him that some “evil spirits” had been following him around, depriving him of fortune and happiness.

Desperate, he accepted the medium’s help even though she demanded RM110,000 as payment.

He was given an amulet to wear and some “blessed” water to drink.

The medium also told him his wife and two daughters aged 16 and 20 were in grave danger since the spirits were lurking around the house.

“She told me if I did not act, my wife and kids would die.

“But they left me in the end as she had also told them that the bad spirits were inside me and would harm them,” he told reporters at a press conference at the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department here yesterday.

Ng was referred to another medium from the same area after the first medium claimed the evil spirits were too powerful for her.

The second medium asked for a fee of RM82,000 to help ward off the spirits.

“I just realised that not only did the two not help matters, things have actually worsened after I went to see them,” he lamented.

Deciding not to waste any more time and money, Ng sought help from MCA Public Services and Complaints Department Head Datuk Michael Chong.

Chong advised the public to be careful when consulting mediums and not to place complete trust in them.

“Since 2007, I have handled 24 cases involving bogus mediums,” Chong said.

“Police can investigate the case if a report is lodged, but cases like these are very complicated, especially with regard to evidence.”
